MIXTAPE OF THE WEEK +: SAP- “Surprise, Surprise”
The holidays had me slacking on the MIXTAPE OF THE WEEK +. Since I was late, I’ll let this mixtape stay up on our site until the end of next week.
This week’s MIXTAPE OF THE WEEK comes from Sap (Da Beat Man), an upcoming producer/rapper from Philly who has been shaking the air waves recently with a co-producer credit on Game’s “Celebration” single. Sap is also the beat master behind Mac Miller’s “Donald Trump,” a huge hit to say the least.
Earlier this year SAP released his mixtape “Surprise, Surprise,” showcasing both his rapping and producer skills. While his rapping may not be “Five Mic” quality, his production skills dwarf most producers his age.
His best beats are unique, with “bounce” reminiscent of a clash between Swizz Beatz and Southern flavored Hip-Hop. Of course his catalogue of sounds is not restricted. He has songs and instrumentals for everyone to enjoy.
Not too long ago Sap signed with Cool and Dre, and he has been working hard to get his name and beats recognized in the industry.
His hustle only gets harder, making him stronger by the minute. I’m looking forward to what this genius has in store for the future of beat makers and producers. I know his sound will change the industry.
Sap’s new mixtape “The Invite” will be released in early February 2013. We will definitely remind everyone when it’s released.

Ogilvy On Advertising: Applying The Principles To Modern Day Ads
I recently finished reading “Ogilvy On Advertising” by advertising genius David Ogilvy. This book is one of the best advertising books I have ever read. It’s straight forward as Ogilvy details what the industry did wrong, what should have been done, and how advertising should be conducted.
The context of this book and the research Ogilvy mentions are mostly outdated, giving people an excuse to dismiss this book. However, many of the basic ideas mentioned in this book still apply today.
Copy is still easily read in a serif font, with black type on a white background
This is most useful for magazine and other print ads. Serif fonts, like Times New Roman, are the easiest to read for most people. Many young marketing professionals try to be different by using a sans-serif font, not realizing that this is hard to read and therefore lowers the chances of making a sale.
If you don’t already know what serifs are, Wikipedia gives a good definition: “In typography, serifs are semi-structural details on the ends of some of the strokes that make up letters and symbols. A typeface with serifs is called a serif typeface (or serifed typeface).”
It now frustrates me when I see white type on a black background. Or worse, when type is set on top of the ad’s picture. It is clearly hard to read. Your better having your copy set in a black color, on top of a completely white background. Don’t forget to use 11 point font.
The research is still mixed on these issues, but from what I’ve seen this seems to hold true for print advertising read by people with good vision. However, since computer screens effect the readability of font, sans serif is easier to read on a computer screen.
Please, I insist you do your own research. The suggestions here may not be effective for your market and ad campaign. Every campaign is different!
Direct Mail Marketing is still highly successful!
Please watch this video. Again, the context of the information may seem outdated, but the basic principles still apply to today’s advertising world.
Many great companies are still going strong today utilizing the direct mail concept, AVON and Mary Kay being just a few examples. This concept of making contact with your target market directly and knowing exactly what they buy can be applied to the new internet age.
When you make an online purchase and use credit cards, these companies know exactly what you’re buying, at what time of the year, for what price, etc. All of this is used to determine your buying habits, so advertising for products you would normally buy is delivered to you to make you buy more of those products.
Smart, highly focused targeting, with no wasteful spending, and saves money!
The same principle has evolved with the introduction of facebook within the last decade. A company can see who “likes” what, what music they listen too or post, what their ethnicity is, where they vacation, etc. All this information can then be used to produce ads specifically tailored to your tastes and interests. Japan executes this concept wonderfully!
Japan’s Facial Recognition
While in its early stages, facial recognition is already making progress in Japan. Cameras pick-up on facial expressions of people passing by, and producing a corresponding ad based on that persons facial expression.
This camera technology will eventually be able to recognize your face, identifying exactly who you are, immediately collecting your saved information (i.e. buying habits, likes, dislikes) from a database. A computer will then produce an ad or recommendation tailored specifically for you.
Watch this great video on one of these technologies:
Effective Ads vs. Creative Ads
Ogilvy stresses understanding the difference between effective ads and creative ads, which could be the difference between good and bad advertising. An ad’s main goal is to sell a product, not win an award for creativity.
If someone can create an ad that is creative and produces effective sales, then that ad is a success. It’s knowing how far one can take creativity without hurting sales.
Do your research!
Parting Thoughts
Business professionals should read this book. It may seem boring at times, but it is well worth the read. I would not, however, base my entire ad campaign on this book. Instead, use this book as a base on which to build your advertising knowledge. Constantly update your information based on modern day research tailored to your specific target market.

Black Friday 2012: The Experience
THE CALM
This Black Friday was quite calm for me. I didn’t stand in line, arrived to my shopping destinations hours after they opened, and still bought everything I was hoping to get. While my experience was great, other parts of California weren’t so pretty.
One of my friends posted pictures on his facebook wall of a broken window at an Urban Outfitters store in Southern California. How can human beings be so excited about saving pieces of paper we call “MONEY”?
Think about it…
THE SAVINGS
It seems to me that the savings on Black Friday aren’t that great, unless you’re trying to buy electronics. But when you’re trying to save $20 on a pair of jeans after standing in line for hours and being pushed, it isn’t worth it. Imagine how productive you could have been or how much money you could have made within that time frame, instead of spending $.
Don’t get me started on gas, which is another expensive reason for you to just stay home on Black Friday.
THE KIDS
Oh and what’s up with the youth still using the word SWAG?
I was standing in line and overheard one young man say “On a rating of one to ten, how Swag is this?,” as he showed a piece of clothing to his friends. I couldn’t help but cringe.
In fact maybe the U.S. should ban all minors without a parent or guardian from being able to shop during Black Friday. I saw many young, annoying kids shopping with their friends, but with no parents or guardians to be found. GO FIGURE!
THE NET
There are many online Black Friday sales going on right now. Just stay home.
Here are some awesome picks for cool fashion savings:
SSUR Empire State:
The company that brought you the Comme Des Fuckdown design that A$AP Rocky has been wearing for quite some time, is giving 20% off during its “BLACK WEEKEND” SALE by using code: SSURDUBB. SSUR is also giving 25% off on Cyber Monday by using code: SSUR25ER.
They will also be selling 150 “Strong Boxes” for $100 on Cyber Monday. Although the 25% discount does not apply, each “Strong Box” will include: 3 T-shirts, 2 Hats, 1 Hoody + Extras. That’s a pretty damn good buy if you ask me, considering the cost of most fashionable urban wear.
Visit SSUR here: http://store.ssurempirestate.com/, and make sure you stand far away from your computer screen so you can clearly see the artistic images on the homepage.
Pingping and Rabbit:
This is a cool fashion duo I’ve been following for a few years. They have dope leggings, dresses, sunglasses and other fashion wear. Get 40% off through Cyber Monday by using code: “THANKS”.
Visit Pingping and Rabbit here: http://shop.pingpingandrabbit.com/

Erwin Blumenfeld: Dada Photographer
Being the man who took the most cover photos for Vogue magazine, Erwin Blumenfeld has become a legend in fashion photography. Blumenfeld’s work ranges from collages mocking Adolf Hitler to Dadaism inspired fashion images.
Born in Berlin, Germany on January 26th, 1897, Blumenfeld’s love for photography would eventually lead to his professional career as a photographer in 1934.
By 1936, Blumenfeld moved to Paris, France and within a year his photos were being published in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. An accomplishment to say the least!
When Nazi’s began to occupy France during World War II, Blumenfeld was taken to a concentration camp. Luckily he escaped, taking him on a journey to New York in 1941. After gaining American citizenship, Blumenfeld continued his amazing and nostalgic work as a fashion visionary until his death in Rome on July 4th, 1969.
His legacy has been celebrated by his wife Lena Citroen, whom he married in 1921, and his three children: Henry, Lisette, and Yorick.
Here is a great source for some of his best photos: http://www.photographyoffice.com/2011/06/25-fashion-photographs-by-master-of-photography-erwin-blumenfeld/
Below is a video showing some of Blumenfeld’s Fashion Film Experiments:
Blumenfeld’s influence has a tremendous impact on modern day fashion photography and film. Check out this CHANEL tribute to Erwin Blumenfeld:
I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from this brilliant photographer:
“Day and night I try, in my studio with its six two-thousand watt suns, balancing between the extremes of the impossible, to shake loose the real from the unreal, to give visions body, to penetrate into unknown transparencies.” -Erwin Blumenfeld

This week I’m bringing you a mixtape from last year by Leon Swanks, a rapper representing Tacoma, Washington. “Purple Palm Trees” is super hot and futuristic with beats from his homie Khris P. Please take the time to download and listen to Leon’s mixtape, you will love yourself forever for not sleeping on this one!

MIXTAPE OF THE WEEK +: Jahlil Beats “Legend Era”
This week’s MIXTAPE OF THE WEEK comes from Chester, Pennsylvania native Jahlil Beats. Being one of the newest additions to the Roc Nation producer roster, Jahlil has made his name known with hit records, such as Chris Brown and Tyga’s “Holla At Me” and Meek Mill’s “Ima Boss.”
Jahlil’s production style has definitely progressed, with louder hi-hats and deeper bass drums. Sonically, this is probably the best mixtape of the year!
